True Colors JAZZ – The Extra-Ordinary Meets the World

A New Year’s concert where musicians from around the world meet extra-ordinary talents

Jazz sessions directed pianist Takashi Matsunaga where musicians with special talents will explore new territories. Concerts held in three cities will feature: Up-and-coming pianist and Nippon Foundation / University of Tokyo’s project “Searching for Extra-ordinary Talents Project” first cohort Kyle Kihira, and prodigy drummer Yoyoka, who has been playing internationally since the age of 10.
Musicians communicate not only through music but through their uniqueness as an individual nurtured by space, time, and the environment. Come experience a new world with diverse possibilities where renowned jazz musicians engage with young musicians with extra-ordinary talent.

Notice for Partial Changes in Performer Lineup

We had previously announced that Alina Rostotskaya, Jonno Sweetman, Josep Traver, Luca Alemanno, Ravee Treesaksesakoon, and Sarah Elgeti would be performing with us, but due to unexpected visa issues, their performance has unfortunately been canceled.
Furthermore, we have a new and exciting lineup of artists who will be participating on those dates instead.

For the Tokyo concert

BodySonic
For the Tokyo concert, with the support from Pioneer, the company’s tactile sound system BodySonic will be available for some of the seatings. BodySonic allows you to enjoy music with your whole body through vibrations that are transmitted by transducers installed in the seat. If you would like to use these seats, tell staff at the registration desk on the day of the event. However, we will prioritise people with hearing impairment due to limited availability of these seats.

    Takashi Matsunaga (Composer / Pianist)

    Matsunaga was born in Hyogo Japan in 1986. At the age of 17 he made his major label debut and received international recognition after his concert with Herbie Hancock. He is the youngest artist to record a leader-album with Blue Note Records. In 2015, he was invited to play for President of Poland at the 20th anniversary of Maggha Center in Poland and composed the theme song for the center. In 2017, he toured in 10 countries around the world.

  • Takuya Kuroda Photo

    Takuya Kuroda

    Kuroda was born in Hyogo Japan in 1980. He started to play the trumpet at the age of 12 and by 16 he was playing at jazz clubs in Kobe and Osaka. He relocated to the U.S. in 2003 to study at the New School Jazz Department and actively played in prestigious venues around the city. His critically acclaimed 2nd album “Edge” released in 2011 was ranked third in JAZZWEEK.COM TOP50 JAZZ ALBUMS. In 2014, he was the first Japanese artists to sign with Blue Note Records and released his major debut album “Rising Son.” In 2016, he released “Zigzagger” from renowned West Coast label Concord Records. Kuroda’s music exceeds the boundaries of jazz and he has collaborated with a wide range of artists including DJ Premier, JUJU, CERO, MISIA, Antibalas, and more.

    Ayako Ozawa

    Ozawa was born in Kimitsu, Chiba. In elementary school she started to show difficulty in running and later in walking, and started to realize that she was different from others. After seeing numerous doctors, at the age of 20 she was diagnosed with a progressive Muscular Dystrophy. She was devastated when she was told that in 10 years she will be in a wheelchair and afterwards bedridden. However, today she spreads the message of “singing and fighting against MD” and of living in general through playing concerts at events, schools, hospitals, and elderly homes around the country. https://challenged-ayako.com/

  • Kyle Kihira Photo

    Kyle Kihira

    At the age of 16, Kihira graduated from Trinity College London with honors and received his diploma last year. From a young age, he started playing music by ear on the electric piano, and intuitively learned music theory. By the time he entered elementary school his drawing book was filled with scores of music. In later years of school his hyperacusis worsened but he continued to make music with the desire for people form all around the world to listen to his music. This April, he made his solo recital debut at the Hamarikyu Asahi Hall.

    Yoyoka

    Yoyoka was born in October 2009. She started to play the drums at 2 years old, and played her first concert at 4. At the age of 5 she formed a band with her family called “Kaneaiyoyoka.” While in kindergarten at the age of 6, she released her first CD. A video of her covering Led Zeppelin’s “Good Times Bad Times” was picked up by NBC, NPR, Rolling Stones magazine, and Billboard and received high praise from musicians around the world. In 2018, she played at RISING SUN ROCK FESTIVAL in EZO. In 2019, she played her first concert overseas at Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles.

    Tatsuya Nakatani

    Drums
    Tatsuya Nakatani is an avant-garde sound artist, composer, and master percussionist. Active internationally since the 1990’s; Nakatani has released over 80 recordings and tours extensively, performing over 150 concerts a year. With his activity in the new music, improvisation and experimental music scenes, Nakatani has a long history of collaboration. Originally from Japan, he makes his home in the desert town of Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.

    Juna Serita

    Bass
    Juna was born and raised in Northern Japan. She started playing electric bass and writing her own music at the age of 17. At 18, shed started a bass/vocal solo project. After graduating from high school, Juna moved to Tokyo, receiving a full scholarship to Showa University of Music. In September 2019, she released “The Princess of Funk” as a bass and vocalist. The EP was downloaded from all over the world. Juna is currently the member of band “TOKYO BRASS STYLE” and “TOKYO GROOVE JYOSHI” and also support for major artists.

    Keisuke Tanaka

    Keisuke started playing bases in high school. In college, he joined clubs for Big Band Jazz and gospel and started to play professionally. He is a member of Jimnanica band set, Modern Conya, Yoshioka Daisuke & The Express, and s.a.b.l.i.t, and he has accompanied artists such as JUJU, Hitomi Tsukikage, Mariko Wakabayashi, Lamp, Mina Shida, and more. His deep understanding and wide range of musicality, along with his flexible approach makes him widely respected musician by his collaborators.

    Viorica Lozov

    Vocals
    Viorica, originally from Moldova, started to sing at the age of 5 in a choir and later studied classical and jazz vocals in the conservatory. She began her professional career at the age 15 and first came to Japan when she was 18. After being active abroad, she is now based in Japan. She is fluent in 5 languages including Japanese, and sings songs from around the world in 13 languages. Her repertoire covers a wide range of genres including jazz, classical, latin, pops, Russian music, canzone, and chanson. Recently she performed with legendary bassist Paul Jackson, and is also active in fields of television commercials, anime, and theater.
